My mom went into labor wearing pink fluffy high heels.

That's not a metaphor. That's a fact. She was a single mother who refused to dim herself down for the world heels on, head up, doing what she had to do and that image has lived in me my whole life.

Long before I knew the word "brand," my mom taught me that how you show up IS the message. She didn't have money. She didn't have a master plan. But she had presence. And I was paying attention.

I've always been a brand builder. I just didn't have the word for it yet.

Back when I was younger, before I ever sold a thing online, I ran around the club scene with a group of girls. We called ourselves the Beastin' Betties.

It wasn't a business. It was a vibe. But here's the thing people KNEW when the Beastin' Betties were going to be at a club. They knew it would be a moment. They knew it would be fun. They knew it would be an experience worth showing up for.

We had a name. A reputation. A signal.

Looking back now, I realize I'd been building brands my entire life. I just didn't know that's what it was called. I always understood instinctively that people don't show up for stuff. They show up for an experience. They show up because of how it makes them feel. They show up for energy, for personality, for the room they want to be in.

That instinct never left me. Every business I've ever built has been an extension of that same understanding. 👠

Then my car got repossessed while I was at work.

It's 2012. I walk out of work and my car is gone. Not stolen, repossessed. From the parking lot. In front of God and co-workers and everybody.

I was mortified.

I needed $500 to get it out of the impound and I didn't have it. I didn't have anyone to call. I didn't have a backup plan. I had the kind of rock-bottom moment that either breaks you or wakes you up.

It woke me up. That was the day I decided I would never be in a position where someone else's decision could humiliate me like that again. So I went looking for a way out. And that's how I found network marketing.

My first check was $628. Then I didn't make a dollar for three years.

Let me say that again, because the internet doesn't want you to hear it.

First check: $628. Felt like a miracle.

After that? Three years of crickets.

I have an allergic reaction to authority. I always have. I think a healthy dose of "watch me" is one of the most powerful business strategies a woman can develop. And I think the world is overdue for more women who refuse to ask permission.
